President Tinubu Returns to Nigeria After Attending UAE Sustainability Summit

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has departed the United Arab Emirates and is expected to arrive in Abuja later on Wednesday following his participation in the Abu Dhabi Sustainability Week.

The president attended the global sustainability summit from January 11 to 15, where he delivered Nigeria’s national statement on climate action and engaged in high-level discussions with United Arab Emirates leaders on strengthening economic and investment ties between both countries.

Tinubu’s UAE trip came after an end-of-year break that began in Europe, during which he remained outside the country from December 28, 2025. His extended absence sparked debate on social media, with critics questioning the lack of a New Year’s address and raising concerns about leadership presence at a time of domestic challenges.

Supporters of the president, however, dismissed the criticism, arguing that the trip was driven by diplomatic and economic priorities. They also circulated videos showing Tinubu’s departure from Abu Dhabi as confirmation of his return.

Official sources have confirmed that the president is scheduled to arrive in Abuja by evening. The Presidency also clarified that no formal transfer of power to Vice President Kashim Shettima was required during the trip, noting that the constitution does not mandate a handover when the president is temporarily outside the country.

Tinubu’s return is expected to refocus attention on domestic governance issues as his administration continues to pursue economic reforms and international partnerships.
