D’Tigress: Tinubu Confirms Payment of $100,000 Reward to Each Player

President Bola Tinubu has confirmed that members of Nigeria’s senior women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, have received the naira equivalent of $100,000 each as part of the Federal Government’s reward package for their outstanding performances.

Tinubu disclosed the payment in a post on his official X account, stating that the financial reward promised to the players had been fulfilled. Officials who were part of the team’s campaign also received payments under the government’s reward package.

The payment is significant because it completes a major part of the presidential recognition announced for D’Tigress following their success on the international stage. The package also includes three-bedroom homes in Abuja and national honours for members of the team.

The reward comes amid renewed attention on the development and recognition of women’s sports in Nigeria. D’Tigress have established themselves as one of Africa’s most successful women’s basketball teams, and their achievements have increased calls for sustained investment in the sport.

The government’s decision to honour the players financially is also expected to reinforce the importance of rewarding sporting excellence and supporting athletes who represent Nigeria internationally. For the players, the payment provides a tangible component of the recognition attached to their achievements.

The development follows a broader history of success for D’Tigress, who have consistently dominated women’s basketball on the African continent and represented Nigeria at major international competitions.

With the $100,000 reward now confirmed as paid, attention is likely to shift toward ensuring that the recognition translates into long-term support for women’s basketball, including improved facilities, stronger domestic competitions and better preparation for future international tournaments.

The latest development therefore goes beyond the financial reward, highlighting the growing national focus on D’Tigress and the contribution of women athletes to Nigeria’s sporting reputation.
