Former Manchester United midfielder Owen Hargreaves has backed Kobbie Mainoo to become one of the best players in the world, praising the England international’s technical ability and composure.
Hargreaves made the prediction after Mainoo impressed during Manchester United’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah at Old Trafford on Thursday. The 21-year-old midfielder controlled the game from a deeper position alongside Youri Tielemans and completed 81 of his 83 passes.
Speaking on TNT Sports, Hargreaves said: “I’ve never seen Kobbie play bad. Every time I watch him play football, I think, ‘How can somebody not play this young man?’”
The former England international also highlighted Mainoo’s technical qualities and ability to remain composed under pressure.
“He’s a star. I think he’s going to be a superstar. He’s only 21 years old, and he plays like he’s 30,” Hargreaves added. He further suggested that Mainoo has the potential to become “one of the best midfield players in the world.”
Mainoo’s recent resurgence has attracted particular attention after his playing time was limited under former United manager Ruben Amorim. Under Michael Carrick, however, the academy graduate has re-established himself as an important part of the midfield and has delivered a series of impressive performances.
Carrick has also praised Mainoo, describing him as a “fantastic player” and highlighting his influence in connecting United’s defence with their attack.
Hargreaves’ assessment is significant as United seek to develop a stronger midfield core around Mainoo and captain Bruno Fernandes. The youngster’s next major test comes in the Manchester derby against Manchester City.
Mainoo joined Manchester United’s academy as a youngster and progressed through the club’s youth system before becoming an established first-team player. His recent form suggests he could have a major role in United’s ambitions, although reaching the level Hargreaves predicts will require sustained performances at the highest level.
