Paris Saint-Germain have emerged as the early leaders of the 2026/27 UEFA Champions League after an action-packed Matchday 1 produced 69 goals across 18 matches.
The defending champions sit top of the league-phase table with three points and a +5 goal difference, following their emphatic 6-1 victory over Slovan Bratislava. Bayern Munich are second, also with three points and a +5 goal difference, after defeating Bodø/Glimt 5-0. PSG lead because they scored more goals.
Barcelona occupy third position after a convincing 5-1 win over Feyenoord, while Manchester United are fourth following their 4-0 victory against Champions League debutants Sabah. Italian newcomers Como produced one of the biggest surprises of the opening round, beating RB Leipzig 4-1 to move into fifth.
Sporting CP are sixth, followed by Stuttgart and Manchester City, who complete the provisional top eight. Aston Villa, Real Betis, Borussia Dortmund and Lens occupy positions nine to 12, while Liverpool and Real Madrid are 13th and 14th respectively. Arsenal, who defeated Napoli 1-0 through Martin Ødegaard’s late goal, are 15th with three points.
The opening round was notable for the dominance of several major European clubs. All four English representatives — Liverpool, Arsenal, Aston Villa and Manchester City — recorded victories, while 16 teams collected three points. Two matches ended in draws, leaving Roma, Shakhtar Donetsk, Fenerbahçe and PSV Eindhoven with one point each.
The standings are particularly significant because of the Champions League’s league-phase format. The top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16, while clubs finishing ninth to 24th must enter the knockout play-offs.
Matchday 2 is scheduled for October 13 and 14, when clubs will have another opportunity to improve their positions in the 36-team competition.
