Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi received a warm reception from supporters on Friday morning at Asaba International Airport in Delta State.
Videos circulating online showed large crowds of enthusiastic supporters surrounding the former Anambra State governor shortly after his arrival at the airport, chanting slogans, taking photos, and expressing excitement over his presence.
Many supporters described the gathering as “organic love,” arguing that the reception reflected Obi’s continued popularity among ordinary Nigerians, especially young people frustrated by economic hardship and the country’s current political direction.
Some individuals in the crowd were also heard criticizing the administration of President Bola Tinubu while voicing support for Obi ahead of the 2027 political season.
Political observers say the airport reception highlights Obi’s enduring grassroots appeal more than two years after the 2023 presidential election, where he emerged as one of the country’s most influential opposition figures under the Labour Party platform.
Supporters of the Obidient Movement have continued to organize public displays of solidarity across different states despite internal political realignments and Obi’s recent association with the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
However, critics argue that enthusiastic crowds at public appearances do not necessarily translate into nationwide electoral strength, insisting that broader political structures and coalition dynamics will remain crucial ahead of the 2027 elections.
The airport reception comes shortly after Obi donated ₦10 million toward rebuilding a fire-damaged school in his hometown of Agulu, Anambra State, a move widely praised by supporters and community members.
Analysts say Obi’s consistent visibility through humanitarian activities, public engagements, and political consultations continues to strengthen his image among sections of the electorate seeking alternative leadership options.
As political activities intensify across Nigeria, public gatherings such as the Asaba airport reception are increasingly being viewed as early indicators of the growing momentum and mobilization efforts surrounding the country’s evolving opposition landscape ahead of the next general elections.
