Warri Chants Support for Peter Obi Amid Political Tension

A crowd of residents in Warri South was seen chanting support for former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi in a video circulating online amid growing political tension in Delta State.

The footage, recorded on Thursday, showed groups of men and women moving along roadside areas near residential and commercial buildings while expressing support for Obi and dissatisfaction with the current political situation in the state.

Observers linked the demonstration to rising frustration over governance concerns under Governor Sheriff Oborevwori as well as controversies surrounding the recent primaries conducted by the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the Delta State House of Assembly elections.

The political atmosphere in parts of Delta State has remained tense following complaints, protests, and allegations of irregularities emerging from some of the party primaries held across the state.

Supporters of Obi interpreted the chanting crowd as evidence of continuing grassroots support for the former Anambra State governor despite ongoing political realignments and party defections ahead of the 2027 elections.

Obi, who was recently cleared as the sole presidential aspirant of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), has continued to attract support from youths and opposition voters in several parts of the country following his strong 2023 presidential outing.

Political analysts say the chants in Warri South reflect broader dissatisfaction among sections of the electorate seeking alternatives to the dominant political parties in Nigeria.

Meanwhile, the APC in Delta State has maintained that its recent primaries were largely peaceful and successful, with candidates such as Augustine Uroye emerging from the exercise in constituencies including Warri South I.

However, protests and grievances from some aspirants and supporters have continued to surface in parts of the state, adding to concerns over internal party unity ahead of the next election cycle.

Analysts note that Delta State remains politically strategic due to its large voting population and influence within Nigeria’s South-South region.

As opposition movements and ruling party structures intensify mobilization efforts ahead of 2027, public displays of political support such as the Warri gathering are expected to become more common across different parts of the country.
