Peter Obi Decries Renewed Killings in Benue and Plateau, Urges Swift Justice for Victims

Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has expressed deep concern over the latest wave of violence in Benue and Plateau states, urging authorities to ensure that those behind the attacks are brought to justice without delay.

Reacting to the incidents, Obi described the continued bloodshed as a tragic reminder of Nigeria’s persistent security challenges. He called on the Federal Government and security agencies to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further loss of innocent lives.

The former Anambra State governor stressed that every Nigerian deserves to live in safety, regardless of location or background. He maintained that those responsible for the attacks must face the full weight of the law, emphasizing that justice for victims is essential to restoring public confidence in the country’s security and judicial systems.

Obi also sympathized with the families of those killed, as well as residents who have been displaced by the violence. He urged governments at all levels to provide humanitarian support to affected communities while implementing long-term strategies aimed at tackling the root causes of insecurity.

The latest attacks have once again drawn national attention to the security situation in Nigeria’s North-Central region, where recurring violence has disrupted farming activities, displaced thousands of residents, and heightened humanitarian concerns. Observers say sustained insecurity in the area continues to threaten livelihoods, food production, and economic stability.

The development is significant because it underscores the growing calls from political leaders, civil society groups, and community stakeholders for stronger security measures and greater accountability. Experts argue that prompt investigations, improved intelligence gathering, and effective prosecution of offenders are necessary to deter future attacks and promote lasting peace.

Benue and Plateau have experienced repeated outbreaks of violence over the years, resulting in significant casualties and displacement. Despite various security interventions introduced by successive administrations, the two states remain among the regions most affected by recurring attacks, prompting renewed demands for comprehensive and lasting solutions to Nigeria’s security challenges.
