Nigerian comedian and actor Bovi Ugboma has opened up about his approach to parenting, revealing that his son broke three television sets while growing up but was not physically punished for the incidents.
Bovi made the disclosure while discussing parenting and child discipline on The Honest Bunch podcast. He said his son would sometimes throw objects and break things when angry, including television sets in the family home.
“I don’t advocate for beating children. You should let children be. My son dey break television for the fun of it. If he’s angry, he will throw stuff and break,” Bovi said.
The comedian explained that he observed his son’s behaviour and eventually noticed a change as the child became older and began showing remorse for his actions.
Bovi disclosed that three televisions had been damaged during the period, adding that his financial capacity allowed him to replace them.
“He got to the age where he got to, and I saw the remorse. At least he broke three TVs. Thank God for capacity. If I couldn’t afford another TV, then the approach would have been totally different,” he said.
He also encouraged parents to examine their emotions when disciplining children, questioning whether physical punishment is being used to correct behaviour or as an outlet for frustration.
“That’s why I tell people, most times when we hit kids, check: are you really trying to correct them, or you’re frustrated?” Bovi said.
His comments have renewed conversations about parenting, discipline and non-violent approaches to correcting children. Some previous reactions to the remarks have included calls for parents to combine empathy with clear boundaries and consequences.
Bovi’s comments were originally made during a 2024 episode of The Honest Bunch podcast and have resurfaced in Nigerian media in September 2026. The comedian has previously explained that his son had communication difficulties, adding context to his approach to parenting.
