Panic in Cross River Border Community as Cameroonian Troops Reportedly Enter Nigerian Territory

Residents of Danare community in Nigeria’s Cross River State have been thrown into panic after a large group of armed men believed to be soldiers from Cameroon reportedly crossed into the Nigerian border community and carried out patrols that lasted for several hours.

Eyewitnesses said the group, estimated to be between 100 and 200 personnel, moved through the area during rainy weather conditions, causing confusion and fear among locals who were unsure of their mission or mandate within Nigerian territory.

The incident has sparked renewed concerns about border security and the vulnerability of remote communities along the Nigeria–Cameroon frontier, which has long been described as porous and difficult to monitor effectively.

Residents React in Panic as Armed Men Patrol Community

According to local accounts, the armed men were seen moving through parts of Danare community without prior notification to Nigerian security authorities or community leaders.

Residents quickly raised alarm, with many fleeing their homes or seeking safety as the patrol continued. Some community members reportedly attempted to confront the group to demand clarification about their presence.

The situation escalated tension in the area, as residents feared a possible escalation of cross-border hostilities.

Community Leaders Intervene

Former Vice Chairman of the area, Hon. Kingsley Mbia, reportedly arrived at the scene alongside other local stakeholders to de-escalate the situation.

He is said to have engaged the group and insisted that they withdraw from Nigerian territory, stressing the importance of respecting Nigeria’s sovereignty and territorial boundaries.

Community leaders emphasized that while the border area has experienced security challenges in the past, the presence of armed foreign troops within civilian settlements raises serious concerns.

Reports indicate that no gunfire or violent confrontation occurred during the incident, and the situation was eventually brought under control without casualties.

History of Border Tensions

The Nigeria–Cameroon border region has a long history of disputes and security challenges, particularly around areas close to the Bakassi Peninsula.

The region has witnessed periodic tensions linked to historical territorial disagreements and security operations in the area.

Residents also recalled past violent incidents, including a 2017 shooting in which several community members were reportedly killed, heightening long-standing fears among border populations.

Anglophone Crisis and Regional Security Concerns

Security experts note that instability in parts of Cameroon has been influenced by the ongoing Anglophone Crisis, which has led to increased military activity in some border regions.

The conflict, which has affected Cameroon’s English-speaking regions, has also contributed to heightened military presence and cross-border security operations in areas close to Nigeria.

This has occasionally resulted in misunderstandings or uncoordinated movements across the shared border, raising concerns among Nigerian border communities.

Calls for Stronger Security and Diplomatic Engagement

Following the latest incident, residents of Danare have called on the Nigerian government to strengthen security surveillance along the border to prevent future incursions.

Community leaders are also urging both Nigerian and Cameroonian authorities to improve communication and coordination in managing border security operations.

Security analysts argue that improved joint border patrols, clearer communication channels, and diplomatic engagement could help reduce the risk of similar incidents in the future.

They also emphasize the need for better infrastructure and increased presence of Nigerian security agencies in remote border communities.

Government Response Expected

As of the time of reporting, official statements from Nigerian security authorities were still being awaited regarding the reported incursion.

Residents are hopeful that a formal investigation will be conducted to determine the circumstances surrounding the presence of the armed group in the community.

Authorities are also expected to assess whether the incident was a result of border miscommunication, operational error, or a broader security issue.
