The United States is reportedly assessing a potential post-Tinubu political scenario as Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential election, according to a statement circulating among political observers and advocacy groups.
The statement claims that officials in Washington have become increasingly concerned about the prospects for a credible electoral process in Nigeria and are monitoring developments surrounding President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
It further alleges that Tinubu would be unable to secure victory in the forthcoming election without the use of what it describes as “undemocratic tactics” or electoral manipulation. That assertion remains a political claim and has not been independently established by the U.S. government or the evidence cited in the statement.
The authors of the statement say their immediate objective is to encourage the United States to communicate clearly to President Tinubu, his political allies and relevant Nigerian institutions that Washington is monitoring Nigeria’s electoral process.
They argue that any actions aimed at suppressing voters or undermining the outcome of the election should attract consequences, particularly where such actions could affect U.S. interests and regional stability.
The statement also stresses that the United States is not being asked to support any particular Nigerian candidate or political party, but rather to support the principle that the next Nigerian president should be determined by Nigerian voters through a credible electoral process.
The U.S. government has historically supported electoral transparency and democratic institutions in Nigeria. The State Department has previously said that Washington supports peaceful, free and fair elections and has provided assistance to Nigerian electoral authorities and civil society organisations involved in election observation.
Following Nigeria’s 2023 elections, the U.S. State Department also documented reports of voter suppression, vote buying, violence, intimidation and other irregularities, while noting that many independent observers considered the overall results to have reflected voters’ choices.
As Nigeria moves toward the 2027 presidential election, attention is therefore expected to remain focused on the conduct of INEC, political parties, security agencies, election observers and other stakeholders, as well as the role of international partners in supporting a peaceful and credible electoral process.
