Adekunle Gold Reveals Why Simi’s Genotype Mattered Before Marriage

Nigerian singer Adekunle Gold has revealed that genotype compatibility was an important consideration when he decided to marry fellow musician Simi, saying he would not have proceeded with the relationship if she had an AS or SS genotype.

The singer made the disclosure during an appearance on the One54 Podcast, where he discussed his experience with sickle cell and the importance of genotype testing before marriage. Adekunle Gold, who has publicly spoken about having the sickle cell genotype, said he and Simi checked their genotypes early in their relationship.

“When we met, the first thing I did was to know our genotype that we match,” he said. He added that Simi is AA, while he is AS, describing the test as an important step before proceeding with the relationship.

Adekunle Gold also stressed the need for couples to understand the potential health implications of having children when their genotypes may increase the risk of sickle cell disease.

“I wouldn’t have married my wife if she were SS or AS. Forget love,” he said, explaining that he did not want to knowingly expose a future child to serious health risks.

His comments have renewed conversations about genotype testing, sickle cell awareness and reproductive decisions among couples in Nigeria. Health professionals and advocacy groups have long encouraged prospective couples to know their genotype and understand their reproductive options before marriage.

The issue is particularly relevant in Nigeria, where sickle cell disease remains an important public health concern and awareness of genotype compatibility is widely promoted.

Adekunle Gold and Simi married in January 2019 after several years of dating and have two children. The singer’s latest comments provide a personal account of how genotype testing influenced his decision to start a family, while highlighting the broader importance of informed reproductive choices and sickle cell awareness.
