Former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has warned that many state governors seeking re-election in the 2027 general elections may fail to secure another term in office.
Kwankwaso, who is currently the vice-presidential candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), made the prediction while discussing the country’s political situation and the growing opposition coalition ahead of the next general election.
The former governor suggested that incumbency alone would not guarantee victory for governors seeking to retain their seats, particularly where voters are dissatisfied with their administration.
According to Kwankwaso, the political environment is changing, with citizens becoming more willing to hold elected officials accountable for their performance in office.
His comments come as political parties and opposition groups intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. Several governors across the country are expected to seek second terms, while political parties are already positioning candidates and negotiating alliances.
The statement is significant because incumbent governors traditionally enjoy advantages such as political structures, government visibility and established party networks. However, Kwankwaso’s prediction highlights the possibility that these advantages may not be enough where voters perceive an administration as underperforming.
The former Kano governor has remained an influential figure in Nigerian opposition politics. His political base in Kano and his experience as a two-term governor have continued to make him a major player in discussions surrounding the 2027 elections.
Kwankwaso’s comments also come amid a broader opposition realignment involving prominent politicians, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi. The emerging coalition is seeking to challenge the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at the presidential and state levels.
