Harry Kane currently occupies the top position in a ranking published by The Guardian, after an outstanding season with Bayern Munich and England. The England captain scored 61 goals in 51 matches for Bayern and played a major role in his country’s World Cup campaign. Reuters also reported that Kane scored 73 goals across club and international football and helped Bayern secure a treble.
Lamine Yamal is ranked second, reflecting his continued rise as one of world football’s most influential young players. The Barcelona forward impressed for both club and country and remains among the strongest candidates despite his relatively young age.
Kylian Mbappé completes the top three in The Guardian’s ranking. The Real Madrid and France forward produced another prolific individual campaign, including becoming the World Cup’s all-time leading scorer. Mbappé has also defended his Ballon d’Or credentials despite failing to win a major trophy, pointing to his individual statistics as evidence of his case.
The shortlist has created a particularly competitive contest, with defending champion Ousmane Dembélé, Rodri, Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland and other established stars also in contention. Different rankings and betting markets have placed the leading candidates in varying orders, highlighting how open the 2026 race remains.
