Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to adopt a more determined political approach, insisting that electoral victory requires strategic effort, organization, and grassroots mobilization.
Speaking at a political gathering, Wike stressed that power is not obtained through wishful thinking but through deliberate political engagement and effective party structures. The former Rivers State governor urged party members to remain active and committed if they hope to regain political dominance in future elections.
According to him, successful political parties must be willing to build strong support networks, connect with voters, and defend their interests through lawful democratic processes. He emphasized that political relevance is earned through hard work, unity, and sustained engagement with the electorate.
Wike’s remarks come at a time when the PDP continues to assess its performance in recent elections and reposition itself ahead of future political contests. The opposition party has faced internal challenges in recent years, including leadership disputes, defections, and debates over strategy.
Political analysts say the minister’s comments reflect growing discussions within the PDP about rebuilding its structures and strengthening its electoral prospects. They note that opposition parties across the country are increasingly focused on coalition-building, grassroots outreach, and internal reforms as preparations for future elections gather momentum.
Supporters of Wike argue that his statement underscores the realities of competitive politics, where parties must actively work to earn public trust and support. Others believe the comments could reignite debates within the PDP about leadership, direction, and the party’s strategy moving forward.
The PDP remains one of Nigeria’s major political parties and continues to play a significant role in national politics despite recent electoral setbacks.
