Professor Patrick Okedinachi Utomi has announced a strategic meeting of governorship aspirants contesting under the banner of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Delta State as part of efforts to build unity and strengthen the party ahead of future political contests.
In a statement, Utomi disclosed that the initiative followed a recent meeting between him and the Leader of the NDC, Senator Seriake Dickson, where both leaders discussed strategies for securing electoral victory and rebuilding Delta State as well as the South-South region.
According to Utomi, it was agreed that he would first bring together all governorship aspirants in Delta State to forge a common front before convening a similar meeting involving governorship candidates from across the South-South geopolitical zone.
The renowned economist and political activist, who is leading the NDC’s Strategy and Manifesto Committee, said the engagement forms part of broader consultations with stakeholders aimed at developing a shared vision for the party.
He invited all governorship aspirants, members of the Delta State Executive Committee, and party elders to a meeting scheduled to hold at his residence in Ibusa on Sunday by noon.
Utomi also addressed concerns arising from a recent disclaimer reportedly issued by some state party officials over the proposed meeting, clarifying that the invitation was personally issued by him and assuring party members that the gathering would proceed as planned.
“I am informed that lack of clarity about the convening source had produced a caveat emptor statement by some state officials. Be assured that the invitation is from me and that the meeting will take place by the grace of God,” he stated.
Expressing optimism about the outcome of the meeting, Utomi said he believes the engagement will foster unity within the party, advance the development of Delta State, and strengthen Nigeria’s democratic process.
He added that further consultations with party stakeholders are expected as the NDC continues work on its strategy and manifesto ahead of future elections.
