Reality TV star and streamer Ijeoma Josephina Otabor, popularly known as Phyna, has raised concerns about the future of Nigeria’s growing streaming industry, warning that the sector could collapse if content creators continue to prioritise virality over meaningful content.
Phyna made the comments during a recent livestream with Jeffrey Benson, where she discussed the changing nature of streaming and the behaviour of some Nigerian content creators.
According to the former Big Brother Naija winner, some streamers are increasingly relying on controversial stunts, exaggerated behaviour and questionable claims to attract viewers and generate clips that can go viral on social media.
“Streaming in Nigeria will soon collapse because Nigerians push streamers that clip farm, go crazy and tell lies just to entertain streams,” Phyna said.
She explained that she was initially very energetic and unconventional when she started streaming but later decided to moderate her approach.
“I was crazy when I started but I decided to chill because I am a lady and I can’t keep up with that,” she added.
Phyna’s comments have renewed discussions about the direction of Nigeria’s streaming ecosystem, particularly as more entertainers and social media personalities turn to live streaming as a source of income and audience engagement.
Her concerns also highlight the tension between entertainment built around instant virality and the need for creators to develop sustainable content strategies. For the industry to maintain long-term growth, creators may need to balance audience engagement with originality, consistency and responsible content.
Phyna subsequently urged fellow Nigerian streamers to focus on creating meaningful content rather than pursuing clout at all costs.
The reality star, who rose to prominence after winning the 2022 edition of Big Brother Naija, has since expanded her career into entertainment and streaming. Her latest comments add to the wider conversation about the opportunities and challenges facing Nigeria’s rapidly developing digital entertainment industry.
