A 2007 official letter from the Office of the Governor of Anambra State has resurfaced, drawing renewed attention to the ethical standards adopted by former Governor Peter Obi during his time in office.
The letter, dated May 8, 2007, was addressed to the Managing Director of the Anambra State Housing Development Corporation. It acknowledges the corporation’s allocation of two plots of land—Plot 29/L255 and Plot 29/L254—located at Hill View Estate, Nkwelle-Ezunaka.
Rather than accepting the offer, Obi formally declined the allocation, explaining that he considered it inappropriate to derive personal benefits from occupying public office.
In the letter, he stated that his position as governor was “by the Grace of God” and emphasized that public office should be viewed as an opportunity to serve, not as a means of acquiring personal privileges. He wrote that accepting such benefits could undermine the moral authority required to govern with fairness and integrity.
Obi further explained that distancing himself from what he described as the “undue privileges of the office” was necessary to remain committed to selfless service. While expressing gratitude to the Housing Development Corporation for its thoughtfulness, he respectfully rejected the allocation.
The document has resurfaced at a time when issues of transparency, accountability, and the ethical conduct of public officials are once again dominating national discourse. Supporters have cited the letter as evidence of Obi’s long-standing commitment to prudent and principled leadership, while others note that the letter reflects a personal ethical decision made during his tenure.
