Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general election, has urged Nigerians to take responsibility for ensuring a transparent electoral process.
Obi made the remarks while speaking with journalists after attending the funeral service of Pa Simon Okorie Abaa, father of NDC Ebonyi South senatorial candidate Chief Linus Okorie, in Onicha Igboeze, Ebonyi State.
The politician said the success of the electoral system depends not only on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) but also on the willingness of citizens to defend their votes and participate actively in the democratic process.
According to Obi, Nigerians must carefully assess the current state of the country and decide the direction they want for the future, particularly regarding governance and national development.
He expressed concern over the economic challenges facing the country, highlighting increasing poverty and hunger as issues that require urgent attention.
The former Anambra State governor said the effects of economic hardship are evident in many communities and called for solutions that would improve the living conditions of Nigerians.
Commenting on concerns about possible pressure or intimidation during the election period, Obi said the broader challenges facing citizens, including economic difficulties, have already affected many Nigerians.
He encouraged citizens to use their voices and democratic rights to demand improved leadership and accountability.
Obi also spoke about his relationship with Chief Linus Okorie, describing it as a long-standing association that began during their time in the Labour Party before they both moved to the NDC.
He attended the burial to pay his respects to the late Pa Simon Okorie Abaa and extended his condolences to the family.
