Oyo Kidnappings: Sunday Igboho Claims He Knows Politicians Behind Abductions

Yoruba Nation agitator Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Sunday Igboho, has alleged that certain politicians are behind the recent wave of kidnappings and insecurity in Oyo State, particularly the abduction of schoolchildren in Orire Local Government Area.

Igboho made the claim amid growing public outrage over the mass kidnapping of pupils and teachers from schools in parts of Oyo State, an incident that has entered its third week without the release of the victims.

The activist, who has consistently spoken against insecurity in the South-West region, said he possesses information about individuals allegedly sponsoring criminal activities in the state. However, he did not publicly disclose the identities of the politicians he accused.

His remarks have added a new dimension to the ongoing debate surrounding the security crisis in Oyo State, where residents, community leaders, and civil society groups continue to demand urgent action from government authorities.

Oyo School Abduction Sparks National Concern

The controversy comes as security agencies intensify efforts to rescue pupils and staff abducted from Baptist Nursery and Primary School in Yawota, Community Grammar School, and L.A. Primary School in Ahoro-Esinele, all located in Orire Local Government Area.

The attack shocked many Nigerians and reignited concerns over the safety of schools, particularly in rural communities where security presence remains limited.

Families of the victims have continued to appeal to the government for swift intervention, while parents and teachers express fears over the growing threat posed by kidnappers and armed groups operating within forested areas.

The prolonged captivity of the victims has sparked protests and calls for stronger security measures across affected communities.

Igboho Demands Thorough Investigation

Speaking on the security situation, Igboho called on law enforcement agencies to investigate individuals allegedly aiding criminal groups responsible for kidnappings and other violent crimes.

According to him, tackling insecurity requires more than deploying security personnel; authorities must also identify and prosecute those who allegedly provide support, protection, or funding for criminal networks.

He argued that the persistence of kidnapping incidents suggests the involvement of influential actors who benefit from instability and insecurity.

The activist maintained that security agencies should focus on uncovering the sponsors of criminal activities if lasting peace is to be achieved in the region.

Government Intensifies Rescue Efforts

Meanwhile, the Oyo State Government has continued efforts to secure the release of the abducted schoolchildren and staff.

Governor Seyi Makinde recently acknowledged intelligence failures that may have contributed to the incident and announced several security measures aimed at strengthening surveillance and emergency response operations.

The state government deployed surveillance aircraft to monitor vulnerable areas and signed an executive order to improve collaboration among security agencies and local security groups.

At the federal level, President Bola Tinubu approved the deployment of 1,000 forest rangers and a specialized rescue team to support ongoing operations in affected areas.

Security officials have expressed optimism that the coordinated efforts will improve the chances of locating the victims and dismantling criminal hideouts.

Questions Over Security and Governance

The kidnapping crisis has also sparked renewed scrutiny of governance and security infrastructure in Orire Local Government Area.

Community leaders and advocacy groups have questioned how billions of naira in federal allocations have been received by the local government while several communities continue to face severe security challenges.

Critics have highlighted the shortage of police facilities and inadequate security presence in some rural settlements, arguing that these gaps may have contributed to the worsening insecurity.

The debate has fueled demands for accountability and transparency in the use of public funds allocated for development and security initiatives.

Calls for Unity Against Insecurity

As investigations and rescue efforts continue, political leaders, traditional rulers, and community stakeholders have called for collective action to address the growing threat of kidnapping and banditry.

Observers say the allegations made by Sunday Igboho are likely to increase pressure on security agencies to investigate claims of political involvement in criminal activities.

While no evidence has yet been publicly presented to support the allegations, many Nigerians believe a comprehensive investigation is necessary to uncover the root causes of insecurity in the region.

For now, the priority remains the safe rescue of the abducted schoolchildren and staff, whose continued captivity has left families and communities anxiously awaiting positive developments from security authorities.
