2027 Election: Supporting Peter Obi Means Helping Tinubu Win, Says Kenneth Okonkwo

Former Labour Party chieftain and Nollywood actor Kenneth Okonkwo has stirred fresh political debate ahead of the 2027 general elections, declaring that a vote for former presidential candidate Peter Obi would ultimately benefit President Bola Tinubu and the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Okonkwo, who played a prominent role in Peter Obi’s 2023 presidential campaign, made the statement during a recent political discussion while assessing the prospects of opposition parties in the next election cycle.

According to him, Nigeria’s opposition forces must unite behind a single candidate if they hope to unseat President Tinubu in 2027. He argued that multiple opposition candidates would divide votes and strengthen the APC’s chances of retaining power.

The former Labour Party spokesman maintained that while Peter Obi remains a popular political figure with a loyal support base, his participation as a standalone candidate in the next presidential election could inadvertently split opposition votes, making it easier for Tinubu to secure re-election.

“Voting for Peter Obi in 2027 is a vote for Tinubu,” Okonkwo reportedly stated, emphasizing the need for a broad coalition of opposition leaders and political parties.

Call for Opposition Unity

Okonkwo stressed that Nigeria’s political landscape requires strategic alliances rather than individual ambitions. He noted that opposition politicians must prioritize national interest above personal political aspirations if they intend to present a credible challenge to the ruling party.

His comments come amid growing conversations about the possibility of a grand opposition coalition involving key political figures from different parties. Several politicians and political groups have been exploring options for collaboration ahead of the next election, citing concerns over economic hardship, insecurity, and governance challenges.

The former Labour Party stalwart argued that the fragmentation of opposition votes was one of the major factors that contributed to the outcome of the 2023 presidential election.

Political observers have long debated whether a united opposition ticket could pose a significant challenge to the APC in future elections. Okonkwo’s remarks are likely to intensify discussions about coalition-building among opposition leaders.

Labour Party Supporters React

The statement has generated mixed reactions among supporters of Peter Obi and members of the Obidient Movement. While some agree that opposition parties need a unified strategy, others insist that Obi remains one of the most viable candidates capable of mobilizing voters across the country.

Critics of Okonkwo’s position argue that Peter Obi’s popularity, particularly among young Nigerians and urban voters, makes him a formidable contender in any presidential contest. They maintain that suggesting support for Obi would benefit Tinubu undermines the democratic right of citizens to vote for their preferred candidate.

Supporters of Obi also point to the significant electoral gains recorded by the Labour Party in the 2023 elections despite limited political structures compared to the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

2027 Political Realignments Begin

As political activities gradually shift toward the 2027 elections, analysts expect increased negotiations, alliances, and defections across party lines. Opposition parties are under pressure to formulate strategies capable of challenging the APC, which continues to consolidate its political influence nationwide.

President Tinubu, who assumed office in May 2023, is widely expected to seek a second term if he secures his party’s nomination. This possibility has prompted opposition leaders to begin discussions on how best to position themselves ahead of the next electoral cycle.

Kenneth Okonkwo’s remarks highlight the growing debate over whether opposition parties should rally behind a consensus candidate or maintain separate political identities.

With more than a year before major campaign activities are expected to commence, the question of opposition unity is likely to remain a dominant theme in Nigeria’s political discourse. Whether Peter Obi chooses to contest again and whether opposition leaders can agree on a common front may ultimately shape the outcome of the 2027 presidential election.
