BREAKING: Tension in Gboko as APC Youths Allegedly Attack Gov. Alia’s Commissioner, Political Appointee During Assembly Primary Dispute
There was tension in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State following reports that angry youths believed to be members of the All Progressives Congress (APC) allegedly attacked two appointees of Governor Hyacinth Alia during the party’s Assembly primary election.
The affected officials were identified as Hon. James Tor, a commissioner in the Benue State Government, and Hon. Smart Girgi, the governor’s political point man for Gboko LGA.
According to reports from the scene, the duo were confronted by a group of aggrieved APC youths who accused them of attempting to leave the venue with materials meant for the primary election. The situation reportedly escalated into a physical altercation after the youths intercepted them.
Eyewitnesses claimed that the confrontation turned violent, with both officials allegedly assaulted in the presence of security personnel. Videos and photographs circulating on social media purportedly show the aftermath of the incident, although the circumstances surrounding the clash remain unclear.
Some of the youths involved reportedly stated that the era of electoral manipulation and impunity was over in Gboko, insisting that party members would resist any attempt to undermine the integrity of the electoral process.
The incident has heightened tensions within the APC in Benue State and may further expose internal divisions ahead of future political contests.
As of the time of filing this report, neither the Benue State Government nor the leadership of the APC in the state had issued an official statement regarding the allegations. Security agencies have also yet to publicly comment on the incident.
