Lagos Projected to Become the World’s Most Populous Megacity by End of Century

Lagos State is projected to become the world’s first city to surpass 100 million residents, according to emerging population forecasts that highlight the rapid urban growth of Nigeria’s commercial capital.

Experts estimate that Lagos, currently one of Africa’s largest cities, could reach the historic milestone before the end of the century if current population trends continue. The projection underscores the city’s growing importance as a major economic, financial, and cultural hub on the African continent.

Driven by high birth rates, rural-to-urban migration, and economic opportunities, Lagos has experienced unprecedented population growth over the past few decades. The city attracts thousands of new residents annually seeking employment, education, and improved living standards.

Urban planners and development experts, however, warn that such growth could place enormous pressure on infrastructure, housing, transportation, healthcare, water supply, and public services. They stress the need for long-term planning and significant investment to ensure sustainable development.

The Lagos State Government has continued to implement infrastructure projects aimed at improving transportation networks, housing delivery, and economic development. Initiatives such as rail expansion, road construction, and urban renewal programs are expected to play critical roles in managing future population growth.
