The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has granted eligible Nigerians additional time to participate in the Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise as preparations for the 2027 general elections continue.
The commission said the extension is intended to ensure that more citizens have the opportunity to register, update their personal information, or apply for the transfer of their voter registration before the exercise concludes. The move is expected to benefit Nigerians who recently became eligible to vote as well as those who have yet to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs).
INEC explained that the decision aligns with its commitment to conducting inclusive and credible elections by expanding access to voter registration across the country. The electoral body emphasized that increasing the number of registered voters remains a key part of strengthening Nigeria’s democratic process.
The commission also advised prospective voters to visit designated registration centres to complete the process within the extended period. It warned against multiple registrations, stressing that duplicate registration is prohibited under the Electoral Act and could result in the cancellation of affected records.
The extension has received positive reactions from political parties, civil society organisations, and election monitoring groups. Many stakeholders described the development as an opportunity for more Nigerians to exercise their civic rights and participate actively in choosing their leaders during the 2027 general elections.
