INEC Chairman Pledges Stronger Measures Against Election Irregularities Ahead of 2027 Polls

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that the commission is committed to eliminating electoral irregularities and strengthening the credibility of the country’s elections ahead of the 2027 general polls.

The INEC chairman, who assumed office in October 2025 following Senate confirmation, gave the assurance on Tuesday while addressing concerns over public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process.

According to him, the commission is implementing reforms aimed at preventing malpractice, improving transparency, and ensuring that the 2027 elections are conducted in a manner that reflects the genuine choices of Nigerian voters.

The pledge comes against the backdrop of widespread public skepticism, much of it stemming from controversies surrounding the 2023 general elections and more recent concerns raised during off-cycle elections, including allegations involving electoral officials, election materials, and compliance with established procedures.

Critics argue that public confidence in INEC has been weakened by previous disputes over election management, delays in results transmission, technical failures, and allegations of irregularities. Many Nigerians have therefore insisted that confidence can only be restored through visible improvements in the conduct of future elections.

In response to these concerns, INEC has highlighted plans to strengthen the use of technology, improve the integrity of the voters’ register, enhance training for electoral personnel, and reinforce internal accountability mechanisms.

Political analysts note that the credibility of the 2027 elections will be crucial to Nigeria’s democratic stability, especially as the political landscape becomes increasingly competitive with major parties preparing for intense campaigns.

Civil society organisations and election observers have emphasized that beyond technological improvements, transparent communication, strict adherence to electoral laws, and swift responses to complaints will be essential in rebuilding public trust.

The commission’s promise has generated mixed reactions among citizens. Supporters of the reforms expressed optimism that lessons from previous elections will lead to better outcomes, while skeptics maintain that only concrete actions on election day and throughout the electoral cycle will determine whether the promises are fulfilled.

As political parties prepare for primaries and campaign activities ahead of 2027, attention will remain focused on INEC’s ability to deliver elections that are transparent, peaceful, and accepted by the majority of stakeholders.

The debate underscores a broader challenge for Nigeria’s democracy: ensuring that electoral institutions remain independent, credible, and capable of guaranteeing that every legitimate vote counts.
