Abuja, March 3, 2026 – Political economist and public affairs analyst Pat Utomi has cautioned that actions by lawmakers concerning amendments to the Electoral Act could pose a serious threat to Nigeria’s democratic system.
Utomi expressed concern that certain legislative moves, if not carefully handled, may weaken electoral transparency and public confidence in the country’s democratic institutions. He urged members of the National Assembly to prioritize national interest and safeguard the integrity of the electoral framework.
According to him, any amendments that appear to roll back reforms aimed at strengthening credible elections could erode trust in the political process and destabilize the democratic order.
The comments come amid ongoing debates over proposed changes to the Electoral Act, with stakeholders across the political spectrum weighing in on the implications for future elections. Observers say the discussion underscores the broader tension surrounding electoral reforms ahead of the next general polls.
