Freedom at Last: Abducted Oriire Pupils, Teachers Rescued — But the Questions Remain

The rescue of the abducted pupils and teachers from Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State is welcome news and a moment of relief for their families, the community, and Nigerians who followed the traumatic ordeal with deep concern.
Every rescued child deserves to be celebrated. The security personnel involved in securing their freedom also deserve recognition for their efforts.
However, beyond the celebration lies a more difficult conversation that cannot be ignored.
The real measure of success is not how many kidnapped victims are eventually rescued, but how effectively government prevents innocent schoolchildren from being abducted in the first place.
For many Nigerians, the rescue does not erase the painful reality that pupils and teachers were exposed to fear, hunger, harsh weather, disease, and the constant threat of violence while in captivity. Families endured days of uncertainty, praying for their loved ones’ safe return.
Critical questions therefore remain:
What security failures allowed armed kidnappers to seize schoolchildren and teachers?
What concrete steps will be taken to ensure schools, especially those in rural communities, are adequately protected?
Have those responsible for the kidnapping been arrested, or do they remain free to strike again?
What support, including medical care and psychological counselling, will be provided to the rescued children and teachers?
What long-term strategy is the government implementing to end the recurring cycle of mass abductions?
Nigerians are increasingly concerned that kidnappings have become recurring national emergencies rather than isolated incidents. While successful rescue operations are commendable, lasting confidence will come only when children can attend school without fear and parents no longer worry whether their children will return home safely.
The return of the Oriire pupils and teachers should mark not only the end of one painful episode but also the beginning of renewed commitment to securing every Nigerian school and bringing perpetrators of such crimes to justice.
Until that happens, celebrations will continue to be overshadowed by the question many parents are asking: Who will be next?
