Obienyem Reveals Alleged Cause of Rift Between Kenneth Okonkwo and Peter Obi

A former media aide to Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, Valentine Obienyem, has offered what he described as the underlying reason behind the public fallout between actor-turned-politician Kenneth Okonkwo and the former Anambra governor.
In an opinion piece titled “Kenneth Onuku Okonkwo: The News I Do Not Like,” Obienyem alleged that the disagreement between both men stemmed from an unresolved housing request made to Obi.
According to Obienyem, the dispute—which has played out publicly in recent months—may have its roots in what he characterized as dissatisfaction over unmet expectations following a private interaction between the two men.
The former presidential aide claimed that Okonkwo had expected Obi to either purchase or rent a duplex for him, but was instead allegedly offered assistance for a flat arrangement, an offer he said was viewed as inadequate.
Obienyem further alleged that following the encounter, Okonkwo reportedly described Obi as “stingy” in conversations with associates. He claimed that some of those privy to such discussions later disclosed the details publicly.
While acknowledging that he had initially considered making the matter public in response to Okonkwo’s criticism of Obi, Obienyem said he exercised restraint out of respect for Obi’s personal values and preference for discretion.
Using references to ancient Greek combat sports, particularly pankration, Obienyem reflected on how age and experience had altered his approach to public disputes, emphasizing that truth eventually finds its way into the open.
He argued that the episode illustrates broader issues of entitlement and unsustainable lifestyles among public figures, maintaining that refusing to finance extravagant living should not be interpreted as a lack of generosity.
“Obi’s refusal to fund an unsustainable and extravagant lifestyle does not diminish his generosity,” Obienyem wrote, adding that resentment over such decisions may reveal deeper personal conflicts.
As of the time of filing this report, Kenneth Okonkwo has not publicly responded to the specific allegations contained in Obienyem’s article.
The development comes amid lingering political tensions following the 2023 general elections and the continued realignment of political actors ahead of the 2027 electoral cycle.
