Wike Says Rainbow Coalition Will Decide Rivers Governorship Candidate

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has declared that his political alliance, known as the Rainbow Coalition, will determine who emerges as the next governorship candidate in Rivers State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking during a gathering of supporters and political associates, Wike said the coalition had grown into a formidable political structure capable of shaping the future leadership of Rivers State.

The Rainbow Coalition is a cross-party political alliance comprising factions and supporters from several political parties, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), All Progressives Congress (APC), Labour Party (LP), and Action Alliance (AA).

According to Wike, the coalition’s influence and grassroots network position it to play a decisive role in selecting candidates for major elective offices in the state, including the governorship seat.

He maintained that political success in Rivers would depend on strategic alliances and popular support rather than party labels alone, arguing that the coalition represents a broad spectrum of political interests within the state.

The statement comes amid continuing political tensions in Rivers State following Wike’s fallout with Governor Siminalayi Fubara, a dispute that has significantly reshaped the state’s political landscape since 2023.

Wike has repeatedly emphasized the strength of his political structure in Rivers and has recently intensified efforts to consolidate support across party lines while also backing President Bola Tinubu for re-election in 2027.

Supporters of the former Rivers governor argue that his extensive political network and influence remain unmatched in the state, making the coalition a major force in future elections.

However, critics contend that Rivers voters will ultimately decide electoral outcomes and that no single political bloc can unilaterally determine the state’s political future.

Political analysts note that Rivers State is expected to remain one of Nigeria’s most fiercely contested political battlegrounds due to its economic importance, large voting population, and the ongoing rivalry between competing political factions.

The declaration is likely to intensify political calculations among aspirants and parties preparing for the 2027 governorship race, as alliances continue to evolve in one of Nigeria’s most strategically significant states.

With the election cycle gradually approaching, observers expect the struggle for control of Rivers politics to remain a major feature of national political discussions.
