Obi–Kwankwaso Bloc Emerges in ADC, Sets Stage for 2027 Primary Showdown with Atiku

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is fast becoming a rallying point for Nigeria’s opposition figures, as alignments ahead of the 2027 elections begin to take shape.

Leading figures including Peter Obi, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and Atiku Abubakar have all been linked to the party since early 2026, signaling a potential realignment within the opposition landscape.

Kwankwaso is reported to have joined the party in late March during a political gathering in Kano, while Obi also completed his registration around the same period following internal divisions within his former political platform.

A growing coalition known as the Obi–Kwankwaso Movement is now seeking to merge the support bases of Obi’s “Obidients” and Kwankwaso’s “Kwankwasiyya” networks. Analysts say the strategy aims to bridge northern and southern voting blocs, potentially creating a formidable force within the ADC.

Discussions within the emerging alliance have reportedly explored different ticket configurations, including a possible Obi–Kwankwaso presidential pairing. Supporters argue that their combined performance in the 2023 elections demonstrates significant grassroots appeal across regions.

However, Atiku Abubakar has maintained his position in the race, insisting on an open and transparent primary process within the party. His stance sets the stage for a competitive internal contest as multiple heavyweights vie for the ADC presidential ticket.

The developments highlight intensifying maneuvering within opposition ranks, as political actors seek strategic alliances capable of challenging the ruling party in the next general elections.
