Former Anambra State Governor and Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has marked his 65th birthday with a call for selfless service, national reflection and renewed commitment to improving the lives of Nigerians, saying birthdays should be occasions for gratitude and humanitarian action rather than extravagant celebrations.
In a reflective message released to commemorate the milestone, Obi said reaching the age of 65 provided an opportunity to look back on life’s journey with thanksgiving to God while considering how the years ahead could be devoted more meaningfully to serving humanity.
According to him, although birthdays in many developed countries may be celebrated lavishly because citizens enjoy functioning institutions, security and economic stability, Nigeria’s realities demand a different approach.
Obi noted that despite the country’s abundant human and natural resources, millions of Nigerians continue to grapple with poverty, unemployment, poor healthcare and limited opportunities. He argued that such challenges should inspire leaders and citizens alike to focus less on personal celebrations and more on efforts to improve society.
“Our nation is blessed with enormous human and natural resources, yet millions of our people continue to struggle,” he said, adding that birthdays should serve as moments of sober reflection, thanksgiving and renewed dedication to nation-building.
The former governor stated that throughout his career in business, the corporate sector and public service, he had regarded every position of privilege as an opportunity to positively impact the lives of others rather than pursue personal comfort.
He explained that over the years he had consistently encouraged friends, supporters and organisations wishing to celebrate him with expensive gifts or elaborate ceremonies to instead channel those resources into projects with lasting social benefits.
According to Obi, this philosophy has contributed to the construction and support of schools, hostel blocks and other community projects designed to improve access to education and uplift disadvantaged communities.
“The greatest celebration of life is not what we receive from others, but the lives we can touch positively,” he stated, describing service to humanity as the highest form of fulfilment.
To mark his birthday, Obi attended a Mass of Thanksgiving in Onitsha, where he expressed gratitude to God for His protection, guidance and blessings over the years.
Following the church service, he visited St. Raphael’s Hospital in Umueri, Anambra East Local Government Area, where he donated ₦10 million to support the hospital’s healthcare services.
During the visit, Obi toured the facility and interacted with patients receiving treatment. He said witnessing the challenges faced by many patients reinforced his belief that leadership is fundamentally about caring for the vulnerable and ensuring that those unable to help themselves receive compassion and quality healthcare.
He emphasised that investments in healthcare and education remain among the most meaningful contributions any society can make, describing hospitals and schools as institutions that preserve lives and shape the future of generations.
Political observers said Obi’s birthday activities reflected a continuation of his longstanding emphasis on philanthropy and public service. Supporters praised the hospital donation and his message encouraging leaders to prioritise the welfare of citizens over personal luxury.
