Former Kaduna State governorship aspirant Yusuf Zariyi has resigned from the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) and announced his defection to the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Zariyi announced the decision at a press conference in Kaduna on Wednesday, August 26, explaining that his move followed consultations with stakeholders and his assessment of developments within the NDC.
The politician said he initially joined the NDC because he believed the party offered a platform through which he could pursue his political objectives and contribute to improved governance. However, he said controversies surrounding the party’s governorship primary and subsequent developments influenced his decision to leave.
Zariyi maintained that his involvement in politics was driven by his desire to improve the lives of ordinary Nigerians rather than simply seek political office.
“Power in itself is not an end; it is a means to basically making better the lives of people,” he said.
He also described his political activities as an extension of his advocacy for vulnerable groups and communities.
“I represent women, I represent children, I represent the oppressed, I represent everybody that is a victim of lack of equity,” Zariyi stated.
According to him, his decision to join the APC was based on the belief that the party could provide a platform through which he could continue pursuing his goals of justice, good governance and improved living conditions.
The defection is significant as political realignments intensify ahead of the 2027 elections. Zariyi’s departure could affect the NDC’s political structure in Kaduna, particularly as parties continue working to attract influential figures and strengthen grassroots support.
Zariyi, however, assured his supporters that his community-oriented activities would continue despite his change of political affiliation. He urged them to remain committed to supporting vulnerable people and promoting good governance.
His move comes at a time when Kaduna’s political landscape is becoming increasingly active, with political parties positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 governorship and other elections.
The former NDC aspirant’s defection adds to the broader pattern of political movement and realignment currently taking place across Nigeria as politicians assess their platforms and strategies ahead of the next electoral cycle.
