The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has stepped up efforts to strengthen internal unity in Imo State ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the party’s National Leader, Senator Henry Seriake Dickson, holding talks with candidates and key stakeholders.
The meeting, which took place on Saturday, was described by Dickson as “very fruitful” and focused largely on reconciliation, cooperation and strategies for securing electoral success for the party in the state.
Dickson said the engagement brought together party leaders, candidates and other stakeholders under the leadership of former Imo State Governor Achike Udenwa, who serves as the NDC’s state leader.
“This evening, I convened a consultative and reconciliation meeting with leaders, candidates, and stakeholders in Imo State, led by Chief Achike Udenwa,” Dickson said.
According to him, participants agreed to put aside differences and collaborate toward the success of all NDC candidates contesting the 2027 elections.
The former Bayelsa State governor also urged party members to embrace reconciliation and take responsibility for strengthening the organisation at the grassroots.
“We urged candidates and leaders to serve as agents of reconciliation,” he said, while commending Udenwa for his leadership role in Imo.
Dickson further disclosed that the national leadership would deploy a team of senior party officials to Imo to assist with the reconciliation process and deepen engagement with stakeholders.
The development comes as political parties across Nigeria intensify preparations for the 2027 elections. For the NDC, resolving internal disagreements and maintaining cooperation among candidates could prove important as the relatively new party seeks to establish a stronger presence across the country.
The meeting also reflects the growing importance of party organisation ahead of the elections, particularly at the state and local levels where candidates depend on coordinated structures to mobilise supporters.
With the 2027 polls approaching, the NDC’s ability to maintain unity among its leaders and candidates will be closely watched as the party continues efforts to expand its political influence.
Dickson’s Imo engagement therefore represents part of a wider strategy to consolidate the party’s structure, promote reconciliation and position its candidates for the forthcoming electoral contest.
