2027: Kano APC Hit by Mass Defection as Hundreds Join NDC

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has suffered another political setback ahead of the 2027 general elections following the defection of hundreds of its members to the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).

The defectors reportedly joined the opposition party during a political gathering in Kano on Saturday, where they were formally received by NDC leaders. The development comes as political parties intensify grassroots mobilisation ahead of the next general elections.

The latest movement is expected to attract attention because Kano remains one of Nigeria’s most politically influential states, with a large voting population and a history of strong electoral participation.

The defectors were reportedly welcomed into the NDC as part of efforts to expand the party’s structure across the state. Their decision to leave the APC is also being viewed within the wider context of the political realignments currently taking place ahead of 2027.

The NDC has recorded a series of defections in recent months as prominent political figures and supporters have moved into its fold. In May, several members of the National Assembly also defected to the party, citing political and leadership disagreements within their former platforms.

The party subsequently received additional support in Ogun State, where thousands of members and supporters from different political parties were reported to have joined the NDC.

For the APC, the latest defection in Kano could increase pressure on the ruling party to strengthen its grassroots structures and address concerns among members as the 2027 elections approach.

However, political defections do not necessarily translate directly into electoral victories, as voters ultimately determine election outcomes through their ballots.

The development comes at a time of intense political realignment across Nigeria, with opposition parties seeking to build stronger coalitions and challenge the APC’s dominance at the federal level.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, the movement of politicians and grassroots supporters between parties is expected to continue, making party organisation, voter mobilisation and internal unity increasingly important to the major political contenders.
