The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Enugu State has appointed Nigerian-American businessman and writer, Dr. SKC Ogbonnia, as the leader of the party in the state as preparations for the 2027 general elections intensify.
Ogbonnia’s appointment was announced following an expanded meeting of the NDC state executive in Enugu, where party leaders said his experience, political commitment and contributions to the growth of the party influenced the decision.
The announcement comes at an important time for the NDC, which is working to strengthen its structures and resolve internal differences ahead of upcoming elections.
NDC State Secretary, Dr. Sebastine Chukwuebuka Okafor, said the party considered Ogbonnia’s background in business, academia and public affairs valuable to its efforts to build a stronger political organisation in Enugu.
He said the new leadership arrangement was aimed at improving coordination among party members and positioning the NDC for electoral success.
“The party is focused on building a united structure that will work collectively towards electoral victory,” Okafor said.
He also urged party members and supporters to cooperate with the new leadership, stressing the need for unity and collective responsibility as the party prepares for future political contests.
NDC Enugu State Chairman, Dr. Johnpaul Anih, congratulated Ogbonnia on his emergence and expressed confidence in his ability to contribute to the party’s growth.
Anih also commended National Leader Senator Seriake Dickson and National Chairman Senator Cleopas Moses Zuwoghe for their efforts to strengthen the party across the country.
The development is particularly significant because the Enugu chapter has faced internal disagreements over leadership and candidate selection in recent months. Ogbonnia himself had previously been at the centre of a dispute over his status within the party, with the state chairman later rejecting reports of his suspension and describing him as a bona fide member and respected leader.
The latest appointment could therefore represent an attempt to consolidate the party’s structure and improve cooperation among its various stakeholders.
As preparations for the 2027 elections continue, the NDC will face the task of translating the new leadership arrangement into stronger grassroots mobilisation and a unified electoral strategy in Enugu State.
