United Kingdom Commends Tinubu’s Economic Reforms

The United Kingdom has praised the economic reforms of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, stating that the policies are beginning to yield visible results, while also describing Nigeria as an African superpower with a crucial role in regional peace, security, and economic development.

The commendation came during the 4th UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership Dialogue held in Abuja, where the United Kingdom’s National Security Adviser, Jonathan Powell, represented the British government.

The high-level meeting was co-chaired by Powell and Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, and focused on expanding cooperation in key areas including counter-terrorism, cybersecurity, maritime security, intelligence sharing, and broader regional stability.

During the dialogue, Powell acknowledged Nigeria’s strategic importance on the African continent, highlighting its population, economic influence, and leadership role in addressing security challenges across West Africa.

The discussions also examined ways to deepen collaboration between both countries in tackling terrorism, transnational organised crime, cyber threats, and threats to maritime safety in the Gulf of Guinea.

Senior Nigerian military officials, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, alongside other service chiefs and security officials, participated in the meeting and reiterated Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening cooperation with international partners.

Both nations reaffirmed their shared commitment to building stronger security frameworks, improving intelligence coordination, and supporting efforts aimed at maintaining peace and stability within Nigeria and the wider region.

The UK-Nigeria Security and Defence Partnership has become an important platform for strategic engagement between both countries, reflecting their longstanding diplomatic, economic, and security relations.

The latest dialogue comes at a time when Nigeria continues to confront security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, piracy, and cybercrime, while also implementing major economic reforms intended to stabilise and transform the country’s economy.

The United Kingdom’s endorsement of these reforms is expected to strengthen diplomatic ties between Abuja and London, even as domestic debates continue over the immediate impact of the policies on inflation, cost of living, and the welfare of ordinary Nigerians.

The meeting concluded with renewed assurances from both governments to sustain cooperation and work together toward a more secure and prosperous future for Nigeria, the region, and their broader international partnership.
