United Bank for Africa (UBA) Plc has announced a major leadership transition following the retirement of Tony Elumelu as Chairman of the Board, with Chukwuma Nnorom appointed as his successor.
The development marks the end of Elumelu’s tenure as chairman, during which he played a significant role in shaping the bank’s growth strategy, expansion across African markets and strengthening of its position as one of the continent’s leading financial institutions.
UBA, in a statement, said the transition was part of its corporate governance process and was designed to ensure continuity, stability and sustained growth for the banking group. The bank expressed appreciation for Elumelu’s leadership, noting his contributions to the institution’s development and long-term vision.
Nnorom, who has been appointed the new chairman, is expected to lead the board as UBA continues to focus on innovation, digital banking expansion, customer service improvement and business growth across its African and international operations.
The appointment comes at a time when the banking sector is experiencing rapid transformation driven by technology, changing customer expectations and increased competition. Industry observers say effective leadership will be crucial in navigating emerging opportunities and challenges in the financial services industry.
Elumelu, a prominent Nigerian businessman and philanthropist, has been associated with UBA’s transformation and broader efforts to promote entrepreneurship and economic development through various initiatives.
Under the new leadership arrangement, stakeholders expect UBA to maintain its strategic direction while exploring new opportunities for expansion and improved financial services delivery.
The bank assured customers, shareholders and investors that the transition would not affect its operations, adding that its commitment to delivering value and maintaining strong corporate governance standards remains unchanged.
The appointment of Nnorom as chairman represents a new chapter for UBA as the institution continues its pursuit of growth, innovation and greater competitiveness in Nigeria and other global markets.
