President Bola Tinubu and members of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) recited the former Nigerian national anthem, “Arise, O Compatriots,” during a recent council meeting, drawing public attention due to the anthem’s replacement as the country’s official national anthem.
The development occurred at the beginning of the FEC session, where the President and cabinet members rendered the former anthem instead of the current national anthem, “Nigeria, We Hail Thee,” which was reinstated following the enactment of legislation approving its return as Nigeria’s official anthem.
The unexpected rendition quickly generated reactions across political and social circles, with many Nigerians questioning whether the performance was an oversight or a symbolic gesture. While some observers described the incident as a simple error, others argued that it highlighted the need for greater awareness of the country’s official national symbols within government institutions.
The Federal Government has not immediately issued an official explanation regarding the incident.
