Senator Abdul Ningi has called on the Federal Government to review its diplomatic relationship with South Africa following renewed xenophobic attacks targeting Nigerians and other foreign nationals in the country.
The lawmaker made the appeal while reacting to reports of fresh incidents of violence, arguing that Nigeria must adopt a firmer foreign policy stance to safeguard the lives and properties of its citizens living abroad. According to Ningi, repeated diplomatic engagements have failed to deliver lasting solutions, making it necessary for the government to explore stronger measures.
He urged the Federal Government to consider suspending or reviewing aspects of its diplomatic ties with South Africa until adequate guarantees are provided for the safety of Nigerians residing and conducting business there. Ningi maintained that the protection of Nigerian citizens should remain a top priority in the country’s foreign policy.
The senator expressed concern over the recurring wave of xenophobic violence, noting that many Nigerians have suffered injuries, lost businesses, and, in some cases, lost their lives during attacks over the years. He stressed that decisive action would send a strong message that Nigeria is committed to defending its citizens wherever they may be.
Ningi also called on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to intensify diplomatic efforts by engaging South African authorities and relevant international bodies to ensure perpetrators of xenophobic attacks are brought to justice. He added that stronger bilateral cooperation is needed to prevent future incidents and improve the safety of foreign nationals.
