Supporting Bad Governance for Personal Gain Is a Dangerous Gamble – AY Warns

Abuja, Nigeria – May 31, 2026

Popular Nigerian comedian and social commentator, AY, has cautioned against supporting bad governance for personal gain, warning that the consequences of a dysfunctional system eventually affect everyone, regardless of status or privilege.

In a thought-provoking statement that has generated public discussion, AY criticized the tendency of some individuals to defend poor leadership, corruption, and institutional failures simply because they derive temporary benefits from the system.

According to him, many people mistakenly believe they can remain insulated from the negative effects of bad governance as long as they continue to enjoy personal advantages. However, he argued that history has consistently shown that the collapse of institutions and the erosion of accountability ultimately impact all citizens.

“Many think they can dine with the devil using a long spoon. Sooner or later, the spoon disappears, and they realise they were never exempt from the consequences,” AY stated.

The comedian’s remarks highlight growing concerns about political opportunism and the normalization of governance failures in exchange for short-term rewards. Analysts note that such attitudes contribute to weakening public institutions, undermining democratic accountability, and slowing national development.

AY further emphasized that a broken system eventually produces consequences that extend beyond political affiliations, social status, or economic privilege. From insecurity and economic hardship to poor public services and declining infrastructure, the effects of weak governance ultimately reach every segment of society.

“A broken system eventually serves everyone the same meal,” he added, stressing the importance of prioritizing the collective good over individual interests.

His comments have resonated with many Nigerians who continue to advocate for greater transparency, accountability, and responsible leadership in public affairs.

Observers say the message serves as a reminder that sustainable national progress can only be achieved when citizens reject the lure of short-term gains and actively support institutions and policies that promote justice, equity, and good governance.

The statement underscores a growing call for Nigerians to remain vigilant, demand responsible leadership, and contribute to building a system that works for all citizens rather than a privileged few.
