Senator Questions N127 Million Allocation for Bulletproof SUV in 2026 Budget Review

A member of the Senate has raised concerns over a proposed N127 million allocation for the purchase of a bulletproof Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) in the 2026 budget, describing the amount as insufficient for a standard armored vehicle suitable for official duties abroad.

The issue was raised on Wednesday during the Senate’s review of the State House’s 2026 budget proposals. Chairman of the Senate Committee on Special Duties, Senator Kaka Shehu, argued that the allocation would not cover the cost of a proper armored vehicle capable of meeting security and diplomatic standards.

According to him, official vehicles used for international engagements should reflect Nigeria’s status and provide adequate protection. He maintained that the proposed figure may fall short of acquiring a vehicle that meets those requirements.

Despite his reservations about the SUV allocation, Senator Shehu commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for implementing reductions across several budget lines in the proposed 2026 fiscal plan. However, he indicated that he and at least one other senator would oppose the specific provision during deliberations.

The debate comes amid legislative scrutiny of the proposed N58.47 trillion national budget for 2026, as lawmakers examine allocations across ministries, departments, and agencies.

Public reaction to the development has been mixed. While some commentators expressed concern over the cost of official vehicles at a time of economic strain, others questioned spending priorities, citing comparisons such as the Health Ministry’s reported N36 million allocation within its N218 billion capital budget.

The discussion has intensified ongoing conversations about fiscal discipline, national security needs, and government spending priorities as Nigeria navigates economic challenges.

Further deliberations on the budget are expected in the coming weeks as the National Assembly continues its review process.
