Nollywood actress and filmmaker Ruth Kadiri has opened up about the fears that influenced her decision to keep her marriage away from the public spotlight, revealing that she once had serious reservations about marriage.
Kadiri made the disclosure while speaking on the Dear Ife podcast, where she reflected on her relationship, marriage and the decision to have a low-key wedding.
The actress explained that her concerns were largely driven by uncertainty about the future. At the time she was preparing to get married, she questioned whether the union would stand the test of time and feared that making the wrong decision could eventually lead to the marriage falling apart.
“I had a phobia of marriage. I was battling with the fear of the unknown and asking myself, ‘Am I going to make this decision and everything will now scatter?’” Kadiri said.
According to the mother of two, those concerns made her uncomfortable with the idea of having a highly publicised marriage. She therefore preferred to keep the ceremony intimate and away from unnecessary attention.
Kadiri said her husband, Mr Ezerika, understood her concerns and supported her preference for a private celebration. The couple reportedly invited only 50 people to their wedding, with each of them selecting 25 guests.
“I didn’t want a lot of drama regarding my relationship. That’s why my husband and I invited only 50 people to our wedding,” she explained.
The actress’s revelation is significant because it provides insight into why some celebrities deliberately separate their private relationships from their public careers. Kadiri has maintained a relatively private family life despite being a prominent figure in Nollywood.
Her comments also highlight the personal uncertainty that can accompany major life decisions, particularly marriage, even for individuals who are constantly in the public eye.
Ruth Kadiri and Mr Ezerika reportedly got married in November 2018. They have two daughters, born in August 2019 and July 2022.
Kadiri has since continued to balance motherhood with her career as an actress, producer and filmmaker, while keeping much of her family life away from the entertainment spotlight.
