Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential hopeful Peter Obi has called for a thorough and transparent investigation into allegations of assault and rape involving students in Osun State.
Reacting to reports of the alleged incident, Obi urged law enforcement agencies and relevant authorities to conduct a comprehensive inquiry to establish the facts and ensure that anyone found responsible is held accountable in accordance with the law.
According to Obi, allegations involving violence against students and other vulnerable members of society should be treated with utmost seriousness. He stressed that victims deserve protection, support, and access to justice, while investigations should be carried out professionally and without interference.
The former governor also emphasized the importance of safeguarding educational institutions, noting that schools should remain safe environments where students can learn without fear of abuse, intimidation, or violence. He called on government agencies, school authorities, and community leaders to strengthen measures aimed at protecting students and preventing similar incidents.
The reported allegations have sparked concern among civil society groups, parents, and education stakeholders, many of whom have demanded a swift and impartial investigation. Rights advocates have also called for adequate support services, including medical care, counselling, and legal assistance for alleged victims.
Legal experts noted that allegations of sexual violence must be investigated thoroughly while respecting the rights of all parties involved. They stressed that due process, evidence-based investigations, and fair judicial proceedings remain essential to achieving justice.
Security analysts also urged members of the public to avoid spreading unverified information capable of prejudicing ongoing investigations, emphasizing the need to allow law enforcement agencies to carry out their duties independently.
Obi reiterated that accountability and the rule of law are critical to strengthening public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system. He maintained that anyone found culpable after due legal process should face appropriate sanctions under the law, while those falsely accused should also receive justice.
