Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation Whirl Stroke, have killed a suspected kidnapper and arrested two others during separate operations conducted across Benue State.
The development was disclosed by the Acting Media Information Officer of Operation Whirl Stroke, Lieutenant Ahmad Zubairu, in a statement issued to journalists.
According to the military, the operations were carried out as part of ongoing efforts to disrupt kidnapping networks and other criminal activities threatening communities in Benue and neighbouring areas.
One of the operations reportedly involved troops disrupting a roadblock allegedly mounted by suspected kidnappers. During the encounter, troops engaged the suspects, resulting in the death of one suspected kidnapper, while other members of the group reportedly fled the scene.
The military said two other suspected kidnappers were arrested in separate operations. Their arrests are expected to assist security agencies in gathering intelligence about kidnapping networks operating within the state and identifying other individuals linked to the criminal activities.
The latest operation comes as Benue continues to face serious security challenges, including kidnapping, armed attacks and other forms of criminality affecting rural communities and travellers.
Operation Whirl Stroke has been conducting sustained military operations across Benue and neighbouring states as part of efforts to restore security and protect residents.
In recent months, troops under the operation have carried out several operations against suspected criminal groups in the region. In July, soldiers reportedly killed two suspected terrorists and rescued three kidnapped victims during a raid on a suspected criminal hideout in Katsina-Ala Local Government Area of Benue State.
In another operation in June, troops reportedly rescued two kidnap victims and killed four suspected criminals during operations across Benue and Taraba states. Security personnel also recovered an AK-47 rifle and ammunition during the operations.
The latest arrests could therefore provide security agencies with additional intelligence as they attempt to dismantle criminal networks operating across the region.
Kidnapping remains a major concern for residents of several Benue communities, particularly those travelling through isolated roads and rural areas where criminal groups can operate with limited resistance.
Security agencies have repeatedly urged residents to provide timely information about suspicious movements and criminal activities in their communities.
The military has also emphasised the importance of cooperation between security personnel and local communities in combating insecurity.
However, the continuing attacks and kidnappings have placed pressure on authorities to sustain military operations while also addressing the underlying conditions that allow criminal groups to establish bases and operate across difficult terrain.
For residents, the success of security operations will ultimately be measured by whether communities can travel, farm and conduct business without fear of attack or abduction.
The latest operation represents another effort by the military to disrupt criminal activity in Benue, but authorities are expected to maintain pressure on the remaining members of the suspected kidnapping networks.
Investigations into the arrested suspects are also expected to determine their alleged roles, identify possible accomplices and establish whether they are connected to previous kidnapping incidents in the state.
