Peter Obi Displays Amex Cards to Defend His Business Legacy

The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 general elections, Peter Obi, has showcased his old American Express cards during a television interview to emphasize that his wealth and business achievements were established long before he entered active politics.

Speaking during an interview on Arise News around June 20, Obi displayed a 1987 American Express Platinum Card, which he described as one of the early cards issued to him as a charter member, as well as a 1999 American Express Centurion Black Card, using them as evidence of his long-standing involvement in international business and finance.

The former Anambra State governor explained that his career in commerce, investment, and banking predated his political journey, stressing that he built his reputation in the private sector before assuming public office.

Obi stated that upon becoming governor of Anambra State in 2006, he resigned from the boards of 11 companies to avoid conflicts of interest and fully dedicate himself to public service.

Among the positions he referenced were his roles in the banking sector, including his involvement with Guardian Express Bank and his appointment as the youngest chairman of Fidelity Bank at the age of 34.

He further argued that his entry into politics did not increase his personal wealth, maintaining that his financial standing declined because of his decision to focus on governance and public service.

The interview generated widespread reactions across political and social media circles.

Supporters praised Obi’s remarks, arguing that they demonstrate his record as a successful entrepreneur and banker whose wealth originated from legitimate business activities rather than political office.

They also pointed to his private sector experience as evidence of his understanding of economic management, investment, and job creation.

However, critics questioned some of the claims surrounding the rarity and exclusivity of the American Express cards displayed during the interview, with some arguing that public debate should focus less on personal achievements and more on practical solutions to Nigeria’s economic and social challenges.

Political analysts note that discussions about the personal records, wealth sources, and professional backgrounds of presidential candidates are likely to become more prominent as the 2027 elections draw closer.

They argue that while business accomplishments may influence public perception of a candidate’s competence, voters will ultimately assess contenders based on their policies, leadership records, and proposed solutions to national challenges.

Obi’s comments come as political competition intensifies ahead of the 2027 presidential election, with candidates and their supporters increasingly defending their records and seeking to shape public opinion.

The former governor has consistently presented his background in business and governance as a foundation for his vision of economic reform, fiscal discipline, and institutional development.

As the campaign season approaches, debates over experience, integrity, and the ability of candidates to address Nigeria’s pressing economic and security concerns are expected to remain central to the country’s political discourse.
