Peter Obi Calls for New EU-Africa Partnership Based on Governance

Former Anambra State Governor and 2027 presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has urged the European Union (EU) to rethink its engagement with Africa and support a development model centered on good governance, production, and human capital development.

Speaking during a recent international engagement, Obi highlighted Africa’s vast natural resources, youthful population, and strategic importance, arguing that the continent possesses the fundamental ingredients required for sustainable economic transformation.

He noted that despite its enormous potential, Africa continues to struggle with poverty, unemployment, weak institutions, and underdevelopment, challenges he attributed largely to leadership failures and governance deficits rather than a lack of resources.

Using Nigeria as an example, Obi pointed to the country’s population of approximately 240 million people and extensive landmass, arguing that its economic performance falls significantly below its potential. He contrasted Nigeria’s resource endowment with its relatively low per-capita income and development indicators.

According to Obi, the future of Africa depends on shifting from consumption-driven economies to production-oriented systems capable of creating jobs, increasing exports, and generating wealth for citizens.

He called for stronger partnerships between Africa and Europe that focus on investments in education, healthcare, technology, infrastructure, manufacturing, and agriculture rather than relationships built primarily around aid and raw material extraction.

The former Labour Party presidential candidate also stressed the importance of accountability, transparency, and effective leadership, maintaining that good governance remains the foundation upon which meaningful development can be achieved.

Supporters praised the speech for its data-driven approach and its focus on long-term economic transformation. Many described the address as further evidence of Obi’s efforts to position himself as a statesman capable of engaging global audiences on issues affecting Africa’s future.

Critics, however, questioned some of the statistical comparisons made during the presentation, particularly references involving population and economic indicators. Supporters responded that the comparisons were directed specifically at the European Union rather than Europe as a whole.

The remarks come amid increasing discussions about Africa’s place in the global economy and the role international partnerships should play in accelerating development across the continent.

Political observers note that Obi’s international engagements continue to reinforce his image as a leading opposition figure ahead of the 2027 elections, while also keeping issues of governance, economic productivity, and institutional reform at the center of national debate.

As Nigeria and other African nations seek pathways to sustainable growth, the conversation about governance, production, and strategic global partnerships is likely to remain a key theme in both domestic and international policy discussions.
