In a pivotal address at the opening of the 84th meeting of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Chairman Senator Adolphus Wabara Ph.D. outlined the party’s immediate response to the Supreme Court judgment of April 30, 2026, which stripped the PDP of its National Working Committee (NWC) and annulled the 2025 National Convention.
Senator Wabara informed party leaders that, in accordance with the PDP Constitution (as amended in 2017), the BoT swiftly assumed administrative leadership, averting a leadership vacuum following the court’s decision. The Supreme Court not only annulled the Kabiru Turaki-led National Working Committee but also upheld the suspension of key conveners of the contentious March 29-30 convention in Abuja, invalidating its outcome.
Since stepping in, the BoT has received a wave of solidarity and encouragement from Nigerians across the country. Wabara described these messages as a sign of the enduring faith in the PDP’s capacity to overcome its current challenges and lead a robust opposition to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2027 general elections.
Wabara paid special tribute to Kabiru Tanimu Turaki SAN and his NWC for their patriotism, loyalty, and resilience during a difficult period for the party. He also extended gratitude to PDP governors, the National Assembly Caucus, State Chairmen, ex-officio members, National Secretariat staff, and grassroots members for their steadfastness, adding that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
The BoT Chairman provided a recap of the turbulent events of the past six months, noting that the party’s 101st and 102nd National Executive Committee (NEC) meetings in July and August 2025 approved the Ibadan National Convention, zoning arrangements, and related congress timetables with INEC’s participation and endorsement. However, he revealed that just 42 days before the scheduled convention, internal party opponents—allegedly in collusion with suspended party officials and external adversaries—secretly filed a lawsuit to halt the convention process.
As the PDP BoT takes the helm, Senator Wabara assured members and supporters that the party remains united, resilient, and determined to overcome internal and external obstacles. The BoT’s leadership marks a new phase in the PDP’s journey as it prepares for a strong challenge in the 2027 elections, with calls for unity, accountability, and readiness to rescue Nigeria from what he described as APC misrule.
