Niger State Governor, Mohammed Umaru Bago, has come under heavy criticism following reports that he distributed keys to 100 brand new vehicles to political associates in Minna, sparking outrage among residents who say the gesture reflects a dangerous misplacement of priorities.
The controversy comes at a time when many retirees in the state are still battling unpaid pensions, leaving elderly citizens stranded without access to basic needs after years of service. Critics argue that while pensioners suffer in silence, political loyalists are being rewarded with luxury benefits funded by public resources.
Beyond the pension crisis, over 100 communities across Niger State remain displaced due to insecurity and recurring crises, with many families struggling daily for shelter, food, and healthcare. Observers say these vulnerable citizens have been left with little hope of government intervention.
The condition of public infrastructure has also raised serious concern. Several primary healthcare centres across the state are reportedly in poor condition, lacking essential drugs, personnel, and equipment. Government-owned primary and secondary schools are equally affected, with many classrooms operating without windows, chairs, or functional learning facilities. In many schools, ceiling fans are considered a luxury, while air-conditioners remain unimaginable.
Many residents have described the vehicle distribution as insensitive and politically motivated, insisting that public funds should be directed toward pensions, education, healthcare, and humanitarian support rather than patronage politics.
Despite the growing backlash, some beneficiaries and loyal supporters continue to defend the governor’s action, arguing that such political rewards are part of governance realities. However, for many citizens facing daily hardship, the gesture symbolizes everything wrong with leadership priorities in the state.
