Former Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, has mourned the death of veteran Nigerian actor Oludotun Baiyewu Jacobs, popularly known as Olu Jacobs, describing him as a cultural icon whose influence extended across theatre, television and film.
Mohammed expressed his condolences in a statement issued on Friday, saying Nigeria had lost an accomplished actor whose talent and dignity helped project the country’s creative industry to audiences around the world.
According to the former minister, Jacobs’ career spanned more than five decades and demonstrated the ability of Nigerian performers to compete on international stages. He also described the late actor as a link between traditional Nigerian theatre and the modern film industry.
“For more than five decades, Olu Jacobs brought intelligence, depth and authenticity to every role, leaving an imprint on generations of Nigerians and audiences abroad,” Mohammed said.
Mohammed also highlighted Jacobs’ contribution to developing younger performers, noting his work with his wife, veteran actress Joke Silva, in supporting the growth of Nigeria’s creative sector.
He said Jacobs understood the importance of culture in shaping Nigeria’s international image and described his career as an example of how the arts can contribute to cultural diplomacy and national identity.
In his condolence message, Mohammed extended his sympathy to Joke Silva, the Jacobs family, members of the Nigerian creative community and the actor’s admirers in Nigeria and abroad.
“The curtain has fallen on the earthly performance of this great thespian, but his legacy will endure,” Mohammed said, while praying for strength for the bereaved family.
The tribute adds to a wave of condolences following Jacobs’ death at the age of 84. His family announced his passing on September 16, 2026, describing him as “The Lion of Lufodo” and asking the public to respect the family’s privacy.
Olu Jacobs built a distinguished career across British theatre and television before becoming one of the most recognised figures in Nollywood. His work as an actor, producer and mentor left a lasting mark on Nigeria’s entertainment industry.
