Nigerian rapper Odumodublvck has sparked mixed reactions online after publicly appealing to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for financial support for musicians and other entertainers.
The rapper made the request on X while responding to a post by President Tinubu about his meeting with Vincent Bolloré, an entertainment and media executive, in Paris. Odumodublvck urged the president to go beyond recognising the global contribution of Nigeria’s entertainment industry and provide financial backing for artists.
“Baba come give boys advance from government funds. Na you go be the biggest label boss,” the rapper wrote, adding that such support could help artists and provide opportunities for underground musicians.
Odumodublvck later defended his appeal after some social media users criticised him. His critics questioned why he was asking for government funding while, according to reports, Nigeria continues to face economic hardship and security challenges.
Responding to the criticism, the rapper argued that Nigerian artists rarely receive direct government financial support. He said he had not seen an artist receive government funding to produce an album despite the international recognition Nigerian musicians have brought to the country.
The request has attracted additional attention because Odumodublvck was previously reported to have turned down money to perform at a Tinubu campaign event. His latest appeal has therefore generated discussion about government support for the creative sector and the relationship between entertainers and political authorities.
