Obi Meets U.S. Consul General in Lagos, Pushes for Credible Elections and Stronger Bilateral Ties

Former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, on Tuesday held a strategic meeting in Lagos with the United States Consul General, Rick Swart, in what observers see as a continuation of high-level diplomatic engagements focused on Nigeria’s democratic consolidation and economic revival.

At the heart of the discussions was the urgent need to strengthen the bilateral relationship between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in areas that directly impact governance, institutional integrity, and economic cooperation. Obi emphasised that credible elections remain the cornerstone of any functioning democracy, noting that Nigeria’s electoral process must evolve to reflect transparency, accountability, and public trust.

Sources familiar with the meeting indicate that both parties examined pathways to ensure elections in Nigeria are not only free and fair but also insulated from undue interference. This includes reinforcing electoral institutions, encouraging civic participation, and creating a level playing field where opposition parties can operate without intimidation or systemic disadvantage.

Obi reportedly highlighted the importance of political inclusiveness, stressing that a vibrant democracy depends on the strength of its opposition and the ability of diverse voices to contribute meaningfully to national discourse. He argued that fostering such an environment would not only stabilise Nigeria’s political climate but also enhance its global democratic reputation.

Beyond politics, the meeting also explored expanding trade and investment opportunities between both countries. Discussions touched on improving the ease of doing business, attracting foreign direct investment, and leveraging Nigeria’s vast human and natural resources to drive sustainable economic growth. There was a shared recognition that stronger economic ties could serve as a catalyst for job creation, innovation, and long-term development.

Obi was accompanied by Dr. Adefolaseye Adebomi Adebayo, who also contributed to the dialogue, particularly on areas intersecting governance and economic policy.

Describing the engagement as productive and forward-looking, Obi expressed optimism that sustained collaboration with international partners like the United States would play a crucial role in advancing electoral reforms and strengthening democratic institutions in Nigeria. He maintained that with the right structures in place, Nigeria can achieve elections that are not only credible but widely accepted by its citizens and the international community.
